Colorado Avalanche 4 Winnipeg Jets 3 (Shootout) – With the loss the Jets have gone five straight home games without a win. They did however pick up a point in three of those five games. Jets record is now 14-14-5, their home record 7-7-4. The Jets got off to the start they wanted with Blake Wheeler scoring his eighth of the season 24 seconds into the game, with assists to Toby Enstrom and Bryan Little. Enstrom snapped an eight game pointless drought, while Little now has 21 points in his last 21 games and has points in 22 of the teams 33 games this season. After failing to score on a two man advantage, the Jets did get a power play goal from Michael Frolik to take a 2-0 lead 5:25 into the game. It was the first time in four tries this season that they did not score while up two men. For Frolik it was his eighth of the year and first power play goal of the season. He deflected a Jacob Trouba shot, giving him his first power play point and his first home point. Matt Duchene snapped a seven game goalless drought at 15:08, scoring his 13th to make it 2-1 after the first, despite the Jets outshooting the Avs 14-4. In the last three first periods the Jets have outshot the opposition 37-11. In 29 games Colorado had only given up 17 first period goals. The second period was a reversal with the Avalanche outshooting the Jets 14-4 and getting goals from Ryan OReilly and Duchene to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. Duchenes second of the night came with 2.6 seconds left in the period, on a play that he started in his own end by picking off a Jets pass and breaking out with Nathan MacKinnon. The Jets regrouped in the third period outshooting the Avs 13-5 and getting a power play goal from Wheeler to tie the game. Wheeler now has nine goals on the year and has scored four in the last five games after going 14 games without a goal. It was Wheelers 13th career two goal game. Grant Clitsome picked up his second assist of the night on the goal; Mark Scheifele had the other assist. It was the second time this season the Jets have scored two power play goals in the same game. Jets went to their sixth power play of the night at 14:10 of the third but could not find the go ahead goal. In the overtime period, the Jets had five shots to Colorados three. Both Semyon Varlamov and Ondrej Pavelec made some big saves in this game as at times both sides opened it up and traded chances. The game went to a short shootout. Devin Setoguchi failed to score, Duchene did, Andrew Ladd did not score, while PA Parenteau did and the game was over. It was the Jets 11th overtime game of the year (1-1 in overtime and 5-4 in shootouts.) The Jets close out the three game home stand Saturday afternoon against Dallas (TSN 1290). Wheeler led the way with six shots on goal; Little won nine of 13 face-offs, Dustin Byfuglien played 29:20. Trouba played 25:52 the second highest total of the season. Jets how have 14 power play goals, 11 of them scored at home. This from Blake Wheeler post game - "they took advantage of our mistakes. Weve been taking positives out of losses too long. We didnt do enough to win the game." Coach Claude Noel agreed. "Tough point to lose. We played really good in the first; we got the building involved with the two first goals, and then didnt do the same things in the second. We missed the net, didnt shoot very much. Again, its game management. Turnovers in our own zone. Then get out of the second period 2-2, regroup and away you go." The goal with 2.6 seconds made it 3-2 for Colorado a team that is now 18-0 when leading after two. "We came back in the third, our power play was good again," continued Coach Noel. "Then we get to the shootout and weve been on the good side and the bad side. Winning in the NHL is not an easy process. Were a .500 team and thats not good enough. In the conference we are in, its not even close." Custom Rams Jerseys . A broadcast source said the deal is for five years. "I said Id knock him out," said Stevenson (21-1).First base has always been a position for power hitters, the mashers who can provide home runs and RBI to anchor your fantasy team and the position will improve its depth with a couple of additions this season. The most notable is Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, who moves across the infield now that Prince Fielder has moved on to Texas. No matter what position he plays, Cabrera is a top-tier hitter. Since 2007, he leads them majors with 261 home runs, 856 RBI and 706 runs scored, along with a .326 batting average. Leading all of baseball in those categories, with consistent production year after year, makes Cabrera the biggest difference-maker, even when compared with other sluggers at first base. Arizonas Paul Goldschmidt has quickly emerged as an elite option too, in part because he adds stolen bases to his impressive power numbers. Over the past two seasons, Goldschmidt has swiped 33 bases, most among first basemen, and is one of two (Edwin Encarnacion is the other) to record at least 50 homers and 200 RBI while scoring at least 180 runs. Unless your league has an on-base percentage as a category, there is a large gap between the value of Cincinnatis Joey Votto in real life (where hes MVP calibre) and in fantasy, where hes among the top handful at first base. Vottos tendency to walk limits his RBI upside, which is a factor in his fantasy appeal. When you move beyond the top handful of players, there are still plenty of appealing options. Baltimores Chris Davis has outrageous power. He also strikes out a lot, which slowed his arrival as an everyday player but, after 86 home runs and 368 strikeouts in the past two seasons, hes settled in with the Orioles. Two of the more interesting options at first base are long-time stars. Prince Fielder has had more than 100 RBI in six of the past seven seasons, but last years 25 home runs and .819 OPS were career-lows. Going to a hitter-friendly park in Texas does seem like a decent opportunity for Fielder to have a relative bounceback in his numbers. The other veteran, who has shown more decline, is Albert Pujols, who is coming off his worst season and is pretty much a wildcard for the first time in his career. If Pujols regains his form, even somewhat, then 30 home runs, 100 RBI and a .300 average is possible, particularly coming off a season in which his batting aaverage on balls in play was a career-low .dddddddddddd.258 (same as his average), but there is also the concern that a 34-year-old Pujols isnt going to ever have that legendary bat again. If youd rather avoid the risk of those veterans, Adrian Gonzalez is a steady enough performer and Freddie Freeman is a productive younger slugger who has driven in 203 runs over the past two seasons. Shifting to first base from catcher, Minnesotas Joe Mauer doesnt have the power of a typical top tier first baseman, but hes a career .323 hitter, so if he can stay in the lineup, Mauer will have an opportunity to make a difference in that way. Kansas Citys Eric Hosmer appeared to get back on the right track last season and San Franciscos Brandon Belt has continued to make progress. Both are young, with room to grow, so they offer worthwhile upside if you cant secure the best at the position. Upside comes further down the list too. Whether its White Sox rookie Jose Abreu, the Cuban slugger or across town with the Cubs Anthony Rizzo, who could be prime for big numbers with a little better luck (after a .258 BABIP in 2013). You probably wont have to pay premium prices for someone like Bostons Mike Napoli, even though hes hit at least 20 home runs in six straight seasons, and Oaklands Brandon Moss could be a nice source of mid-to-late round power after slugging 51 home runs in 711 at-bats over the past two seasons. St. Louis Matt Adams is a slugger on his way up and due for a full-time role this year after hitting 17 home runs in 296 at-bats last year. If you get desperate, maybe consider the Yankees Mark Teixeira, who may be ruined by a wrist injury, but has such a track record of putting up power numbers that hes worth a late-round look; certainly around the time that youre willing to venture down the road for Ryan Howard. Anyway, there are a lot of viable candidates to hold down first base for your team, but if your league incorporates corner infielders and DH spots, suddenly first base can thin out in short order, so dont wait too long. Take a good one relatively early, then worry about the upside/bounceback/sleeper options later.
